Children's Mental Health Crisis: A Framework for Action

Children’s hospitals are seeking ways to respond to persistently high demands for pediatric mental and behavioral health services. Genesis Health Consulting leaders created a white paper to identify key questions to guide hospital leaders’ thinking and utilize case studies to illustrate potential investments in pediatric mental and behavioral health services. This paper will be most helpful for hospital leaders in the assessment phase of their work, i.e., understanding population needs, community assets and potential strategic opportunities.

Key Messages:

  • The mental and behavioral health of American children is in crisis.

  • Children’s hospitals should play a central – but not exclusive – role in caring for children’s mental and behavioral health needs.

  • There are multiple ways that this role can manifest for children’s hospitals.

  • The following questions can inform how a children’s hospital evaluates community needs, opportunities, roles, and investments in mental and behavioral health.
