Engaging Communities in Sustainable Change

Updated: Dec 31, 2020

Every family wants to have healthy environments for their children to live, learn, grow, and play. Research has shown that children who grow up in health homes, neighborhoods, and communities have better health, education, and economic outcomes over their lifetime. We designed and implemented a long-term, cross-sector initiative to improve local capacity within communities such that community residents could sustainably build healthier communities for their families. By partnering with community residents, neighborhood services organizations, and governmental agencies, we are supporting the resurgence of thriving communities from the roots up.

Partner communities have demonstrated improvements in resident leadership, civic engagement, and crime reduction. All partner communities have organized resident-led community groups. One neighborhood successfully advocated for county reinvestment that brought community gardens and safe recreation spaces to the neighborhood, and violent crimes have significantly declined over the past 3 years.
